Check In with Yourself

Check In with Yourself

by J. Marie Jones on Jun 18 2026
"Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?"— 2 Corinthians 13:5 (NIV) Are You Becoming the Person God Is Calling You to Be? When was the last time you checked in with yourself? Not the casual, "How are you doing?" that we ask while rushing through our day. I'm talking about a genuine, honest evaluation of where you are spiritually, emotionally, physically, financially, and mentally. Most of us regularly check our bank accounts, review our calendars, monitor our emails, and track our progress toward goals. Yet many believers rarely pause long enough to examine the condition of their hearts and the direction of their lives. In 2 Corinthians 13:5, the Apostle Paul challenges believers with a powerful instruction: "Examine yourselves." Before looking at anyone else's life, he tells us to look inward. Why? Because transformation begins with awareness. The Importance of Self-Examination Self-examination isn't about condemnation. It's not about criticizing yourself, dwelling on your failures, or measuring yourself against others. Instead, it's an invitation to honestly assess whether your daily choices align with the faith you profess and the person God is calling you to become. Think of it like a routine health checkup. The purpose isn't to discover what's wrong so you can feel discouraged. The purpose is to identify areas that need attention so you can grow healthier and stronger. The same principle applies to our spiritual lives. If we never pause to evaluate where we are, we may continue moving in a direction that doesn't lead us toward God's best. Check In With Your Faith Paul's first challenge was spiritual. "Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith." Ask yourself: Am I spending time with God consistently? Do I seek God's guidance before making decisions? Is my faith growing, stagnant, or declining? Am I trusting God more today than I did a year ago? Does my lifestyle reflect what I say I believe? Faith isn't measured by church attendance alone. It's revealed through trust, obedience, and dependence on God—even when circumstances are uncertain. If Christ truly lives in us, there should be evidence of His work within us. Check In With Your Goals Goals are important because they reveal direction. God often gives us dreams, assignments, and opportunities that require intentional action. Yet many of us set goals in January and never revisit them. Take a moment to ask: Am I making progress toward the goals God has placed on my heart? Have I become distracted by things that don't truly matter? Am I investing my time in activities that move me forward? Have I allowed fear, comfort, or procrastination to delay my growth? A goal without consistent action remains only a wish. Sometimes a simple check-in can reveal that we don't need a new vision—we simply need renewed commitment. Check In With Your Finances Finances often reflect our priorities. Jesus spoke frequently about money because He understood the connection between our resources and our hearts. Ask yourself: Am I being a good steward of what God has entrusted to me? Do my spending habits align with my values? Am I living within my means? Am I preparing wisely for the future? Am I generous toward God's work and the needs of others? Financial health isn't measured solely by income. It's measured by stewardship, wisdom, discipline, and trust in God. Sometimes the breakthrough we're praying for requires first managing well what we've already been given. Check In With Your Health Your body is a gift from God. While perfection isn't the goal, stewardship still matters. Consider: Am I getting enough rest? Am I nourishing my body well? Am I moving and exercising regularly? Am I managing stress in healthy ways? Have I neglected medical care or preventative health practices? Many of us have important assignments to fulfill, but it's difficult to sustain purpose when we're constantly running on empty. Taking care of yourself isn't selfish. It's often necessary for sustaining the work God has called you to do. Check In With Your Inner Well-Being One of the most overlooked areas of self-examination is what's happening beneath the surface. People can appear successful while quietly carrying exhaustion, disappointment, bitterness, fear, anxiety, or unresolved hurt. Ask yourself: What emotions have I been avoiding? Is there someone I need to forgive? Have I been carrying burdens God never intended me to carry alone? Am I operating from peace or from pressure? Do I genuinely experience joy, or am I simply surviving? God cares about your inner life. He doesn't just want external success. He desires wholeness. A healthy soul creates space for healthy relationships, healthy decisions, and healthy growth. Are You Aligning With Who God Is Calling You to Be? Ultimately, self-examination comes down to one question: Am I becoming the person God is calling me to be? Not the person culture expects. Not the person social media celebrates. Not even the person I imagined years ago. The person God designed me to become. Growth requires honesty. Honesty requires humility. And humility creates room for God to transform us. The good news is that every check-in is an opportunity—not a verdict. Wherever you discover gaps, God offers grace. Wherever you find weakness, God provides strength. Wherever you uncover misalignment, God offers direction. A Simple Challenge This week, schedule a personal check-in with yourself. Grab your journal. Sit quietly with God. Review your faith, goals, finances, health, relationships, and emotional well-being. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal areas that need attention and areas where growth is already taking place. Celebrate progress. Acknowledge challenges. Then take one practical step toward greater alignment. Because the goal isn't perfection. The goal is becoming more like Christ and more fully embracing the purpose for which He created you. Reflection Questions What area of my life currently feels most aligned with God's purpose? What area needs the most attention right now? What is one habit I can start or strengthen this week? What distractions have been pulling me away from God's best? What is one action step I will take in the next seven days? Prayer Heavenly Father, Thank You for loving me enough to call me higher. Help me to honestly examine my life and identify areas that need Your guidance and transformation. Give me the courage to face the truth, the humility to receive correction, and the discipline to make necessary changes. Align my faith, priorities, goals, finances, health, and relationships with Your purpose for my life. Reveal any distractions, habits, or attitudes that are preventing me from becoming the person You created me to be. Thank You for Your grace, Your patience, and Your presence. Continue Your work in me so that my life reflects Your goodness and brings You glory. In Jesus' name,Amen. J. Do You Really Believe in God?

Do You Really Believe in God?

by J. Marie Jones on Jun 04 2026
Hebrews 11:6 Reveals More Than You Think "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him." — Hebrews 11:6 At first glance, Hebrews 11:6 seems straightforward. Most believers would quickly say, "Of course I believe God exists." But if we're honest, this verse reveals far more than whether we acknowledge God's existence. It exposes where our trust truly resides. Because when people genuinely believe in something, it becomes their authority. It becomes the source they consult, depend on, and ultimately obey. For example, many people trust science because conclusions are drawn after extensive testing and observation. Others trust experience—their own or someone else's—to determine what is possible, safe, or likely to happen. Neither science nor experience are inherently bad. They can be useful tools. The problem arises when they become our ultimate authority instead of God. Scripture repeatedly calls believers to a higher standard: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths." — Proverbs 3:5-6 Yet many of us have never truly surrendered our lives, our plans, and our will to God. We acknowledge Him as Savior, but have we made Him Lord? There is a difference. Why Is Faith Necessary to Please God? One of the primary reasons people rely on experience, statistics, popular opinion, or conventional wisdom is fear. Fear of failure. Fear of loss. Fear of rejection. Fear of looking foolish. Fear of making the wrong decision. Sometimes fears we've identified. Sometimes fears we haven't. Yet throughout Scripture, God repeatedly tells His people, "Fear not." Depending on the translation and wording, variations of "fear not," "do not fear," and similar commands appear hundreds of times throughout the Bible. Why? Because fear competes directly with faith. Fear causes us to seek safety apart from God. Fear causes us to trust ourselves more than Him. Fear causes us to ask, "What if this doesn't work?" Faith asks, "What did God say?" If fear prevents us from consulting God or following His guidance after we have consulted Him, then we are ultimately following ourselves. And if we are following ourselves, we are not following God. The Danger of Trusting Everyone Except God Let me put it another way. If we are following our own guidance, statistics, science, social media experts, cultural trends, or the consensus of the majority, then we are not necessarily following God. Many people make decisions based on what most women are doing. What most men are doing. What most Christians are doing. What most successful people are doing. But God's path has never been determined by majority vote. Noah built an ark while everyone else mocked him. Abraham left everything familiar without knowing where he was going. Peter stepped out of a perfectly good boat. The disciples left careers, businesses, and reputations behind to follow Christ. The pattern throughout Scripture is clear: God's leading often contradicts conventional wisdom. That is why faith is required. Religious Activity Is Not the Same as Surrender Many believers would rather attend church five times a week, serve sacrificially in ministry, volunteer endlessly, and give generously before they actually surrender control of their lives. We can become very comfortable performing religious activities while resisting God's direction. Yet God continually invites us to seek Him. To ask. To listen. To wait. To obey. Sometimes His instructions come through opportunities. Sometimes through circumstances. Sometimes through wise counsel. Sometimes through the still, small voice of the Holy Spirit leading us toward something unfamiliar and uncomfortable. Yet unmistakably God. Faith is not merely hearing God. Faith is hearing Him and responding. The Daily Battle Between Comfort and Obedience Jesus gave us a powerful blueprint for living by faith: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow Me." — Luke 9:23 Notice the word daily. Surrender is not a one-time event. It is a daily decision. Every day presents opportunities to choose comfort or obedience. Every day presents opportunities to trust ourselves or trust God. Every day presents opportunities to follow our fears or follow His voice. The Christian life is not simply believing the right things. It is continually surrendering our will to God's will. When God's Instructions Don't Make Sense One of the greatest tests of faith occurs when God's guidance conflicts with our understanding. What do we do when obedience feels risky? What do we do when God leads us somewhere unfamiliar? What do we do when the outcome is unclear? Many believers assume that uncertainty means God isn't speaking. But often uncertainty is precisely where faith begins. Faith requires movement before there is proof. Faith requires obedience before there is evidence. Faith requires trust before there are guarantees. This is what Paul meant when he said God's strength is made perfect in weakness. Our weakness is exposed when we no longer have all the answers. When we no longer have complete control. When we can no longer rely solely on our own understanding. And yet we move forward anyway because God said so. What Does Walking in Alignment with Hebrews 11:6 Look Like? If we truly believe God exists, then our lives should reflect that belief. We should seek His guidance before making decisions. We should consult Him before consulting everyone else. We should value His opinion above popular opinion. We should obey even when obedience feels uncomfortable. Faith is not passive agreement. Faith is active trust. It is believing that God not only exists but that He is good, trustworthy, involved, and worthy of our obedience. Three Practical Ways to Start Today 1. Ask God Before Making Decisions Before making a major decision, pause. Pray first. Seek God's wisdom before seeking confirmation from everyone else. Make consulting God your first response rather than your last resort. 2. Identify Areas Where Fear Is Leading You Ask yourself: "What am I avoiding because I'm afraid?" "What has God been prompting me to do that I've delayed because it feels uncomfortable?" Often the area where fear is strongest is the very area where God wants to strengthen your faith. 3. Take One Step of Obedience Faith grows through action. Not perfection. Not certainty. Action. Identify one thing God has already shown you and take the next step. Send the email. Apply for the position. Start the business. Have the conversation. Forgive the person. Join the ministry. Write the book. Whatever God has placed before you, take the next faithful step. The Real Question The question is not whether you believe God exists. The question is whether you trust Him enough to follow Him. Because faith is more than agreement. Faith is allegiance. Faith is surrender. Faith is obedience. And according to Hebrews 11:6, faith is the very thing that pleases God. So perhaps the better question is not, "Do you believe in God?" Perhaps the real question is: When God speaks, do you believe Him enough to obey? A Prayer for Surrender and Faith Heavenly Father, Thank You for loving me enough to lead me. Forgive me for the times I have trusted my own understanding more than Your wisdom. Forgive me for the moments when fear, past experiences, other people's opinions, or my own desires have become a greater authority in my life than Your Word. Today, I choose to surrender my will to You. Help me to trust You with all my heart and to lean not on my own understanding. Give me the courage to follow Your guidance even when it is uncomfortable, unfamiliar, or uncertain. Lord, reveal any areas of my life where fear has taken the place of faith. Strengthen me to obey You when obedience requires sacrifice. Teach me to seek You first, listen carefully, and respond quickly when You speak. Help me to remember that You are faithful, that Your plans for me are good, and that Your wisdom far exceeds my own. May my life reflect genuine faith—not merely believing that You exist, but trusting You enough to follow wherever You lead. Today I lay down my agenda, my fears, my doubts, and my need for control. I choose to take up my cross and follow You. In Jesus' name,Amen. J. Who Are You Running With?

Who Are You Running With?

by J. Marie Jones on Jun 01 2026
What My First 5K Taught Me About Community, Consistency, and Pursuing God's Purpose Recently, I completed a local 5K, and while crossing the finish line was certainly an accomplishment, the greatest lesson I learned had very little to do with running. When Discouragement Delays Your Purpose In many ways, this journey began years ago. At one point, I shared my desire to start running with someone. Rather than encouraging me to pursue the goal, they immediately began talking about the injuries that many runners experience as they age. Their comments weren't necessarily meant to discourage me, but that's exactly what happened. Instead of focusing on the potential benefits of running, I became fixated on everything that could go wrong. As a result, I delayed pursuing that goal for years. Looking back, I realize how powerful the words and opinions of others can be. One conversation planted enough doubt to keep me from taking action for far longer than I care to admit. Eventually, however, I decided to do my own research. I learned about proper training methods, stretching, strength training, recovery techniques, hydration, and injury prevention. The more I learned, the more I realized that running—like many things in life—could be approached wisely and intentionally. So I stopped focusing on fear and started focusing on preparation. Why I Joined a Running Club And then I took another important step. I joined a free running club. Initially, I wasn't looking to become a competitive runner or set any records. I simply wanted to connect with people who shared a similar interest in becoming healthier, moving more, and living active lives. What I discovered was far more valuable than I expected. Not everyone in the group runs. In fact, some members participate with the sole intention of walking the route. Yet week after week, they show up. They make time. They remain committed. Why? Because there is something powerful about being surrounded by like-minded people who are moving in the same direction. The fellowship, encouragement, and accountability help them stay consistent even on days when motivation is low. The Biblical Principle Behind Community As I reflected on this experience, I couldn't help but think about Paul's words in 1 Corinthians 15:33: "Do not be deceived: Bad company corrupts good character." Most people read this verse as a warning—and it is. The people we surround ourselves with influence our attitudes, habits, decisions, and ultimately our outcomes. But this principle works both ways. If unhealthy relationships can pull us away from God's purpose, healthy relationships can help propel us toward it. Not every discouraging voice comes from someone who wishes us harm. Sometimes it comes from well-meaning people who are speaking from their own fears, limitations, experiences, or assumptions. That's why it's so important to prayerfully consider whose counsel we allow to shape our thinking. How Like-Minded People Help You Stay Consistent The truth is, the people around us influence what we believe is possible. They can either reinforce our fears or strengthen our faith. They can either magnify obstacles or encourage us to pursue opportunities. They can either give us reasons to quit or remind us why we started. One of the things I've observed in my running club is that consistency becomes easier when you're surrounded by people who are committed to similar goals. There are mornings when someone doesn't feel like showing up. There are days when motivation is low. Yet seeing others lace up their shoes and continue moving forward provides the encouragement needed to stay the course. God Never Intended Us to Walk Alone Our spiritual lives work much the same way. God never intended for us to pursue His purpose in isolation. He designed us for community. He created us to encourage one another, pray for one another, strengthen one another, and help one another remain faithful when life becomes difficult. Sometimes the greatest gift a faith-filled community offers isn't advice—it's example. It's seeing someone else continue to trust God through adversity. It's hearing someone's testimony of God's faithfulness. It's watching others remain committed to their purpose and being reminded that you can do the same. Progress Over Perfection One thing I love about the running club is that everyone participates at their own level. Some run the entire route. Others alternate between running and walking. Some walk the entire distance. Yet everyone is welcomed. The goal isn't perfection. The goal is progress. The same is true in our walk with God. We are all growing at different rates. We are all learning different lessons. We are all at different stages of our journey. But when we surround ourselves with people who love God and desire to honor Him, we create an environment where growth becomes more natural, consistency becomes more attainable, and purpose becomes easier to pursue. A Question Worth Asking: Who Are You Running With? Crossing the finish line of that 5K reminded me of a simple but important question: Who am I running with? Who am I allowing to influence my thoughts, habits, and beliefs? Who encourages me to pursue God's purpose for my life? Who challenges me to grow when it would be easier to stay comfortable? And perhaps just as importantly: Am I helping others stay encouraged on their journey as well? Because whether we're talking about running, faith, business, ministry, or personal growth, one truth remains: The people we run with often determine how far we're willing to go. Reflection Questions 1. Who are the people currently influencing your life the most? 2. Are they helping you move closer to God's purpose or further away from it? 3. What area of your life could benefit from being connected to a community of like-minded people? 4. How can you encourage someone else this week as they pursue their own God-given goals? Prayer Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of community. Help me to surround myself with people who strengthen my faith, encourage my growth, and inspire me to pursue the purpose You have for my life. Give me wisdom to discern which voices to follow and courage to move forward in faith. And help me to be a source of encouragement and support to others as they run their own race. In Jesus' name, Amen. J. MARIE JONES is an author and former media professional who is passionate about sharing her faith journey as a mother, teacher, and daughter called by God.
